From lab to production line in over 70 days! This energy storage battery is not a simple one

In late November, journalists from the Convergence Media of the Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone visited the Delta Energy International R&D Center for an on-site tour. On this chilly winter day, a touch of warm sunlight was particularly precious, bringing a unique warmth to the International R&D Center.
The Delta Energy International R&D Center, as an important part of the Delta Energy Technology Group's Jiaxing Energy Storage Battery Intelligent Manufacturing Headquarters Base project, has received strong support from the government and the industry. Inside the production workshop of the super pilot line at the International R&D Center, the journalist saw that all the production equipment was operating orderly, as if performing a rigorous and harmonious symphony. Each R&D technician was busy with their work, and their concentration and effort formed a vibrant working scene.
In this winter season, the journalist deeply felt that everyone was working towards the same goal: to promote the advancement of energy storage and utilization, to facilitate the comprehensive promotion of China's energy transformation, and to contribute to the development of green energy industries in the Delta region and even the world. Under this warm sunlight, their enthusiasm and perseverance, like that beam of light, illuminated the entire International R&D Center and also illuminated the path ahead.

In the warmth of the winter sun, we enter the "Super Pilot Line" workshop of the Delta Energy International R&D Center, where orderly operating automated machines are the production equipment for lithium iron phosphate E280S batteries.
In recent years, with the rapid development of industries such as wind power and photovoltaics, the demand for new types of energy storage has quickly expanded, making the energy storage industry an undisputed energy sector. On November 9th, the 2023 World Energy Storage Conference was held, once again positioning the new energy storage industry as an important link in accelerating the construction of a manufacturing powerhouse and ensuring national energy security.
Energy storage is not a brand-new track. The year 2021 was referred to as the "First Year of Energy Storage." In that year, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration successively issued policies related to energy storage. Stimulated by this, the energy storage market began to experience explosive growth. In February of this year, the National Energy Administration made a strong eff ort to guide the macro development of the new type of energy storage industry and to promote rapid growth of the industrial scale.
Jiaxing Economic and Technological Development Zone is advancing the development of energy storage with the wind in its sails. In March of this year, the Delta Energy Technology Group's Jiaxing Energy Storage Battery Intelligent Manufacturing Headquarters Base started construction here; in August, the International R&D Center, an important part of the base, was officially put into use.
"The International R&D Center, with an investment of 210 million yuan, is a collaborative effort by R&D teams and engineers from China, Japan, and South Korea, dedicated to the research and development and industrialization of advanced energy storage battery products," introduced by Tang Zhiyong, Chairman of the Delta Energy Technology Group. From the official launch on August 5th to the production of the first batch of lithium iron phosphate E280S batteries on October 19th, it took only a short period of over 70 days. Its rollout also marks a solid step for the company in the independent research and development of lithium iron phosphate energy storage batteries with long cycle life.
The square cuboid box, which doesn't look very large in volume, can store nearly 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. The first batch of lithium iron phosphate E280S batteries, while ensuring safety and reliability, are expected to have a cycle life of over 12,000 times.
Such an energy storage system has already been tested and operated at the International R&D Center. "By storing electricity during the valley hours of electricity pricing and releasing it during the peak hours, a 400 kWh commercial and industrial energy storage cabinet can save nearly 200,000 yuan in electricity costs per year," said Tang Zhiyong. He added that the applications for energy storage batteries extend beyond this, with market demand in both residential and commercial sectors, but the greatest potential lies in the grid side.
According to the introduction, as the control and operation model of the power system gradually shifts from "source follows load" to "intelligent interaction between source, grid, load, and storage", the operational characteristics are transforming towards a diversified and coordinated approach involving source, grid, load, and storage. Energy storage has become an indispensable part of the new type of power system.
"From this perspective, the energy storage system is like a large "power bank" that can be applied in scenarios such as the power generation side, the grid side, and the user side. It stores energy when costs are low and there is surplus capacity, and releases energy when costs are high and the load is excessive, thus achieving energy balance and generating economic benefits. In addition, it can also optimize the operation of the power grid and play a key role in emergency backup," said Tang Zhiyong.
Today, the Delta Energy Technology Group has formed a vertical industrial chain layout from battery cells, module packs to energy storage systems. Although it is still in the early stages of industrialization, the company has already signed cooperation agreements with more than 20 state-owned and central enterprise electric power companies and related industry listed companies, including State Power Investment Corporation, China Resources New Energy, CHINT SOLAR, and Qing'an Energy Storage, with a total contracted capacity of 18 GWh. The company has also signed preliminary purchase agreements with photovoltaic industry leaders LONGi and Anhui Vowa, promoting the integrated development of photovoltaics and energy storage.
In addition to the lithium iron phosphate E320S batteries with higher storage capacity and the sodium-ion batteries with low-temperature tolerance characteristics, solid-state batteries with higher energy density and excellent safety performance have also been included in the research and development layout.
"The ultimate goal of all core energy storage product development is to form a high-performance energy storage battery-based efficient system integration capability, as well as a secure and reliable system development, production, and sales capability." Tang Zhiyong introduced. The Delta Energy Technology Group focuses not only on product development but also on in-depth exploration and refined services in the system aspect, as well as the integration capability of energy storage-related ecological resources. This allows customers to more conveniently address issues such as energy management, procurement costs, and safety risks.
